Victoria is one of the most bushfire-prone areas in the world and providing advice to CFA on local vegetation risks is an important part of making your community a safer place. The brigade works with the District 12 Vegetation Management team so they are aware of local risk and areas that will benefit from fuel management treatment.
Each year, the brigade consults with the Buxton Progress Association and others before nominating areas for local treatments as part of the annual Safer Together Victoria planning process. The Safer Together program supports Victoria’s bushfire management sector enabling different agencies to work together, in partnership with communities, to reduce the risk of fires in the environment.
In the past, we have been successful in having local fuel reduction works completed, under the Safety Together scheme, in Norman Road (between Buxton and Taggerty) and along the Steavenson River opposite the Buxton Recreation Reserve.
Currently, local fuel management works are planned along the Buxton-Marysville Road (south of Ismay Wynd) and along the Steavenson River upstream of the Maroondah Highway bridge. The purpose of these works is to reduce fire risk as part of the Buxton Township protection plan (PDF).
A copy of our current nominations is available (PDF) and we are always happy to receive comment on our current nominations or additional nominations.
In addition to our local initiatives, the brigade regularly supports Forest Fire Management Victoria with planned burning activities around the Triangle area. In 2024, we provided crews to assist FFMV conduct significant controlled burns at Kings Road in Marysville, Old Coach Road and Mayos Track in Narbethong, and St Fillans in Narbethong.
